DNS Summary of 31st July FreeDNS outage

On 31st July 2021, during routine maintenance to Ecenica FreeDNS service a bug caused a small number of domain names to fail to resolve to the correct DNS records.

We are sorry for the impact to our customers and everyone who relies on them.

Once identified we worked to fix the bug and all affected domains have been restored to the correct DNS records.

Where do we go from here?

In the short term:

  • We’re deploying the bug fix to Ecenica FreeDNS as quickly and safely as possible.
  • We are conducting a complete post mortem of the processes and practices we followed during this incident.
  • We’ll figure out why we didn’t detect the bug during our quality assurance and testing processes.
  • We’ll evaluate ways to improve our remediation time.

In the long term:

  • We will design and implement new procedures to ensure this bug cannot be repeated.

Conclusion
